오늘은 라이프 스타일(Life Style)을 나타내는 이디엄(idiom)을 살펴보겠습니다.

keep up appearances 

keep up appearances '겉모습을 유지하다'로 직역이 되는데, 쉽게 말해서 '체면을 유지하다','체면치레하다'는 뜻입니다. 

Sally continued to keep up appearances even when she was broke and unemployed.

Sally는 실연당하고 실직을 한 상황에 조차도 체면을 유지를 계속했다. 

 live from hand to mouth

live from hand to mouth는 '하루벌어 하루 먹고 산다', '겨우 입에 풀칠하고 산다'는 뜻입니다. 

Most people in this city live from hand to mouth. They can't really afford to go on holiday.

이 도시의 대부분의 사람들이 겨우 하루벌어 하루먹고 산다. 그들은 정말 휴가를 갈 여유가 없다. 

 live beyond one's means

live beyond one's means는 '분수에 넘게 살다'. 쉽게 말해서 '과소비하다'는 뜻입니다. 

Despite the increase in cost of living and having a part-time job, he is still living beyond his means.

생활비가 늘어나고, 임시직이에도 불구하고 그는 여전히 분수에 넘게 살고 있다.

a new lease of life

a new lease of life는 '병이나 걱정을 넘기고 더 오래 사는 기회'를 의미합니다. '기사회생하다'는 의미입니다. 

Moving to a brand new flat has given Lucy a new lease of life.

새로운 아파트로의 이사가 Lucy에게 새롭게 살 기회를 주었었다. 

live high off the hog 

hog은 돼지랍니다. live high off the hog는 '사치롭게 살다', '풍족한 삶을 살다'는 뜻입니다. 

Since he's won the lottery, he has been living high off the hog.

그는 복권에 담첨되고 나서, 풍족한 삶을 살고 있다. 

 live in an ivory tower

live in an ivory tower는 '현실과 동떨어져 살다'는 뜻입니다. an ivory tower 상아탑이라는 뜻입니다. 현실과 떨어진 곳을 상징하는 곳이 바로 상아탑이죠

John has been living in an ivory tower since he was a child. His was always protected by his parents.

John은 어릴 때 부터 현실과 동떨어져 살고 있다. 그는 항상 부모로 부터 보호받는다.
