토론토 지하철 TTC를 타면 많이 볼 수 있는 정부 공익광고를 보면 'get with the program" 이란 문구가 보입니다. 

근데, 무슨 뜻일까요?

get with the program

"Get with the program" or " get with it"는 상황에 따라 가능한 몇가지 뜻이 있습니다. 몇가지 표현을 살펴보겠습니다. 

get with the program = pay attention to what's happening now

첫번째 살펴 볼 의미는 뉴스나 대중 문화에서 "지금 일어나는 일에 주목하다"는 뜻입니다. 누군가가 잘 모르는 사실이나 시대에 뒤쳐져 있을 때, '참여하다', '시작하다'는 새로운 것을 받아들이다는 의미로  'get with the program'이나 'get with it' 로 말하면 됩니다.

Mark의 밴드는 15년간 같은 음악을 연주했다. 정신을 기울여서 새로운 곡을 연주하는게 필요해.

get with the program / get with it = understand / comprehend something or someone.

다른 방식으로 쓰이는 get with the program이 쓰이는 경우는 누군가가 회사나 학교, 사무실에서 규칙이나 과정을 따르지 않을 경우에 사장님이 직원들에게 get with the program이라고 말합니다. 

Terry, I’ve told you several times to be careful about completing your weekly reports. I need you to get with the program and make sure you hand in your reports on time every week!

Terry, 나 너에게 주간 보고서 마무리하는거 신경 써달라고 몇번이나 말했었지. 잘 주목해서 매주 정시에 보고서를 꼭 제출하세요. 

학교에서 선생님은 이렇게 이야기하는 경우도 있습니다. 

Well, only 50% of the students here passed the test. The rest of you need to get with it and start studying.

자. 여기 50%의 학생들이 시험이 통과했어요. 나머지 학생들은 정신을 기우려서 공부를 시작해야해. 

토론토 시민들이 어지간히 재활용 운동에 참여하지 않는 것 같습니다. get with the program!!!
