As the record-setting California drought continues, everyone is encouraged to reduce the water footprint.

As가 딱 나오고 뒤에 죽 보니 the record-setting California drought continues 이렇게 주어(drought) 동사(continues)가 나오면 뜻이 세가지입니다. '~에 따라', '~일 때' ,'~ 때문에' 어떤 뜻인지 보겠습닏. the record-setting 이렇게 하이픈이 있는 것은 거의 다 형용사입니다. '기록을 세우고 있는' California drought 캘리포니아 가뭄이 continues 계속됨에? as 따라...  everyone 모든 사람들이 is encouraged to 이렇게 하나로 묶어서 '~하라고 조성하다, 장려되다'입니다. 뭐하라고?  reduce the water footprint. water footprint(?)

encourage 사람 to do - 누구가 do하도록 장려하다, 북돋우다 (능동)

사람 be encouraged to do - 누군가가 do하도록 장려받는다.

즉, encourage 보다는 be encouraged to가 더 중요합니다.

Numerous experts tell us to think twice before taking a hot relaxing bath, to install low-flow shower heads, to purchase water-efficient toilets, and so on.

Numerous experts tell us to think twice 수많은 전문가들이 우리가 심사숙고하라고 말합니다.   before taking a hot relaxing bath, 일단 쉼표까지 왔습니다. 따끈하고  to install low-flow shower heads, 저수압 샤워 꼭지를 설치한다거나 to purchase water-efficient toilets, 물절약 변기를 구입하라고 말하는군요. and so on.

문장 구조가 보이시죠? tell us to think.... to install.... to purchase .... and so on.

It’s all very nice but hardly anyone knows that “the food we eat makes up more than 2/3 of our total water footprint”, as the GRACE Communications Foundation has reported.

It’s all very nice 매우 좋은 것입니다 but 하지만 hardly anyone knows 누구나 알기 어렵습니다. 뭐가 어렵다는지 볼께요. that “the food we eat makes up more than 2/3 of our total water footprint”, 우리가 먹는 음식이 구성하고 있는데 물의 총량에 2/3를 구성한다는 걸 모른다고 합니다. 동시에  as the GRACE Communications Foundation  Grace Communication Foundation이  has reported.

So, if we really want to make the change, we have to change our eating habits.

So, 그래서 if we really want to make the change, 우리가 정말 변화를 만들고 싶다면, we have to change our eating habits.

You may ask how to do that and the answer is more than simple – eat more plant-based food.

You may ask how to do that 어떻게 해야하는지 물어볼지 모르는데, and the answer is more than simple 답은 더 간단합니다. 즉 채식을 하라는 이야기죠? eat more plant-based food.

The Guardian says that “meat production requires much higher amount of water than vegetables.

The Guardian says that 보통 이런 문장을 '가디언지가 that 이하라고 말했다'고 해석하는데, 이런 문장은 '가디언지가 말한 것은 ~ 이다'라고 해석하시면 됩니다. “meat production requires 고기 생산은 필요합니다. 뭐가? much higher amount of water than vegetables. 채소보다는 훨씬 더 많은 양의 물이 필요하다고 하네요.

IME state that to produce 1kg of meat requires between 5,000 and 20,000 liters of water whereas to produce 1kg of wheat requires between 500 and 4,000 liters of water.”

IME state that IME가 말한 것은 to produce 1kg of meat 고기 1kng를 생산하려면 requires 필요하데요 (뭐가?) between 5,000 and 20,000 liters of water 5천에서 2만리터 whereas 반면에 to produce 1kg of wheat 밀 1kg를 생산하려면 requires between 500 and 4,000 liters of water.

Ecology explains that the difference is so radical because “you have to account for the water the animals drink and also the water that goes into growing their feed.”

Ecology explains that 생태학이 설명하는 것은  the difference is so radical 그 차이점은 너무 극명하다/단연하다 because 왜냐하면 “you have to account for the water 여러분들은 물을 설명해야한다? 어떤 물?   이렇게 명사 뒤에 주어 동사가 나오면 앞에 명사를 설명하는 것입니다. the animals drink 동물들이 마시는 물이군요. and also the water  또 어떤 물이냐면 that goes into growing their feed.  그들의 사료를 키우는데 투입되는 물입니다. ” go into는 '노력을 투입하다'는 뜻입니다.

Even California’s Governor Jerry Brown claimed that “we should be eating veggie burger” in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday night.

Even California’s Governor Jerry Brown claimed that 캘리포니아의 주시사 Jerry Brown이 주장한 것은  “we should be eating veggie burger” "우리는 야채버거를 먹어야합니다." in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday night.

As Ecology says, “you might be thinking, but the beef at the supermarket have already been grown.

As Ecology says, 생태학자들이 말하기를   “you might be thinking, 여러분들이 생각하고 있을지 모르지만 but the beef at the supermarket 슈퍼마켓의 쇠고기은 have already been grown 이미 길러진 것입니다.

That water is already used, so we might as well eat it.

That water is already used, 저 물이 이미 사용되었습니다. so 그래서 we might as well eat it.

However, if we buy and eat water intensive foods now, the food industry will continue to grow or even increase growing them in the future.”

However, 하지만 if we buy and eat water intensive foods now, 우리가 물 집약적인 식품을 지금 사서 먹는다면,  the food industry 그 식품 산업은 will continue to grow 성장을 계속하게 될거고, or 아니면 심지어 even increase growing them in the future.

That’s why the best time to change our eating habits is today.

That’s why the best time to change our eating habits is today.

If you are still not sure whether it’s worth it to cook beans instead of beef tonight, scroll down and check out some statistics.

If you are still not sure 확신이 아직 안든다면 (뭐가?) whether it’s worth it to cook beans instead of beef tonight, 오늘 쇠고기 대신 콩을 요리하는게 더 좋은 것인지 말이죠 scroll down 스트롤 다운해서 and check out some statistics 몇몇 통계를 확인해보세요.
