[시사 영어 뉴스 읽기] 양악 수술(double jaw surgery)에 대해서

 Image-conscious South Koreans are trying the latest procedure in plastic surgery to enhance their looks – double-jaw surgery. After having a nose job and eye reshaping, those who want the "perfect" jaw can opt to go under the knife for what is a major operation. Despite the surgery requiring months of painful recovery, dozens of South Korean celebrities have appeared on television showing off their chiselled new look. And "chiselled" is a key word to describe how surgeons cut away at the upper and lower jaw bones to sculpt the coveted "V-shaped" jawline. Many of the celebrities explained to chat show hosts how their reshaped chins have led to a "turning point" in their careers.

However, not everyone is recommending the operation. Many doctors are advising people against having the surgery for cosmetic reasons. Dr Choi Jin-Young, from the Seoul National University, talked to the AFP news agency of the dangers of the operation. He said: "It's a very complex, potentially dangerous surgery…It's disturbing to see people with no real dental flaws daring to go through it just to have a small, pretty face." There are many reports of the surgery going terribly wrong. One young woman wrote: "My mouth keeps moving leftward and the jaw area has gone numb. I can't even feel when saliva keeps dripping out of my mouth." One woman committed suicide after post-surgery complications.

Image-conscious South Koreans image-conscious라고 하면 뭘까요? 형용사 conscious는 '의식하는', '특별히 관심이 있는' 이란 뜻으므로 '이미지에 특별히 신경을 많이 쓰는 한국인들' 이라고 하면 될 것 같습니다. 이미지에 특별히 관심이 많고 의식하는 한국인들은, 

are trying the latest procedure the latest 라면, '가장 최신의' 이므로 가장 최신 수술을 are trying 할려고 한다. 라고 하면 되겠군요. try가 말 그대로 try 한다니깐 '해볼려고 하다'로 해석하면 되겠습니다. 어디에서? 뒤에 in이 나왔군요. in plastic surgery 음... 성형 수술에서, 

뭐 하기 위해서? to enhance 개선시킬려고 their looks 그들의 모습을...그들의 모습을 개선하기 위해서 성형수술을 하려하는데 그것이 바로  – double-jaw surgery 양악 수술이라는 거군요. 두개의 double, 턱 jaw 수술이라는 말입니다.

After having a nose job / have a nose job 혹은 get a nose job은 '코 성형을 하다' 입니다. and 그리고 eye reshaping, reshape은 원래 '개조하다' 입니다. 그래서 '눈의 개조' 요즘은 쌍거풀 수술 뿐만 아니라 앞트임 뒤트임 등등의 눈 성형 수술이 많죠. 그것을 통칭해서 'eye reshaping' 이라고 했군요. 

자.. 그럼 코성형과 눈성형을 한 후에...... those who 음.. ~한 사람들은 이란 뜻이죠 want the "perfect" jaw 완벽한 턱을 원하는 사람들은 can opt to 'opt to do' 는 do하기로 선택하다'는 뜻이죠. 그래서 뒤에 동사 하기로 선택할 수 있다는 겁니다. 

어떤 선택인지 볼까요. 'go under the knife' 살을 아래도 두다. 바로 '수술 한다'는 뜻입니다.  for ~에 대해서? what is a major operation. 어떤 것을 주요한 수술로 할지에 대해서 선택할 수 있다는 거죠.

Despite는 전치사죠. 그래서 뒤에 명사가 나올 겁니다. '명사 임에도 불구하고'  바로 수술이 나오는 군요. the surgery .... 근데 이상하게 수술 뒤에 다시 동사 비슷한 -ing 형태 requiring 이 나왔습니다. 동사에 이렇게 -ing가 붙어서 나오면.... 앞에 있는 명사를 꾸며주는 형용사라고 생각하면 됩니다. 그래서 뜻이 '요구되는 수술' 입니다. 

뭐가 요구 되는지 볼까요? months of painful recovery 음... 몇개월 간의 고통스러운 회복이 요구되는 군요. 수개월동안의 고통스로운 고통이 요구되는 수술에도 불구하고, 

dozens of 다수.. 한 열명에서 15명 정도 되겠군요. South Korean celebrities 한국의 유명인사 celebrities 들은 have appeared 등장하고 있다는거죠. on television TV에 등장하고 있군요. 

뭐하면서? showing off their chiselled new look. 동사  chisel는 깍다, 쪼다는 뜻입니다. 여기서 과거 분사형태 chiselled로 쓰여서 그들의 깍겨진 새로운 모습을 보여주는... 이 되겠죠. 그들의 새로운 갂겨진 모습을 보여주는 TV에 등장한다는 소리입니다. 

And "chiselled" is a key word to describe how surgeons cut away at the upper and lower jaw bones to sculpt the coveted "V-shaped" jawline.

And "chiselled" is a key word 그리고, "chiselled(깍겨진, 깍기는)" 이라는 것이 핵심 단어이다.  to describe 설명하는 것에 있어서. 무엇에 대한 설명인지 뒤에 나오겠죠. how surgeons 얼마나 외과의사들이 cut away 잘라 내는지에 대해서 at the upper and lower jaw bones 위와 아래의 턱뼈에 대해서  to sculpt the coveted "V-shaped" jawline. 형용사 coveted는 '탐내는' 입니다. 동사 covet가 '탐내다'는 뜻이죠. 그래서 탐내는 V 형의 턱선(jawline)을 조각하기 위해서 어떻게 의사들이 위턱, 아래턱을 잘라내지를 설명함에 있어서 이 '깍겨진, 깍기는' 단어가 이 양악수술에 있어서 핵심 단어라고 하는군요.

Many of the celebrities 많은 유명인들은 explained to ~에게 설명하는군요.  chat 동사 chat 담소를 나누다는 동사입니다. 여기서는 그냥 명사 '담소'로 여기서처럼 chat show hosts는 우리가 말하는 talk show 진행자입니다. 이러한 많은 유명인들이 TV쇼에 나와서 진행자에게 설명한다는 뜻입니다. 무엇을 설명하는지 볼까요. 

how 어떻게 their reshaped chins 그들의 새롭게 만들어진 턱이, chins라고 복수로 적인 이유는 윗턱, 아래턱 두개라서 그렇습니다. 

have led to, led는 이끌다는 뜻 lead의 과거 분사죠. 'to 이하로 이끌어진'입니다. . a "turning point" in their careers. 그들의 경력에서 터닝 포인트로 이끌었다는 뜻이죠. 

 However, not everyone is recommending the operation. Many doctors are advising people against having the surgery for cosmetic reasons. 

 However, 하지만, not everyone 모든 사람들이 ~~ 인것은 아니다 란 뜻이죠.

is recommending the operation. 그 수술, 양악 수술을 추천하는것은 아닙니다 Many doctors 많은 의사들은  are advising people 사람들에 추천한데요.  against 자 전치사 against 는 '~을 반대하여'라는 뜻이죠  having the surgery for cosmetic reasons 미용 이유로 이 수술을 반대할 것을 추천한답니다. 여기서 전치사 for는 '~의 대상'이라는 뜻이죠.

전문가의 의견이 나오겠죠. Dr Choi Jin-Young, from the Seoul National University, 서울대학병원 최진영 박사는 talked to the AFP news agency AFP뉴스에 이야기했습니다. of the dangers of the operation. 이 수술에 대해서 

He said: "It's a very complex, potentially dangerous surgery…It's disturbing to see people with no real dental flaws daring to go through it just to have a small, pretty face." 

뭐라고 말했는지 보겠습니다. He said: 그사람이 말하길 "It's a very complex, potentially dangerous surgery 이 수술은 it은 이 수술은 매우 복잡하고, 잠재적으로 위험한 수술입니다.…

It's disturbing to see people 사람을 보는건 좀 충격입니다. 어떤 사람인지 보겠습니다 . with no real dental flaws 전치사 with는 '~을 가지고 있는', '함께하는' 이란 뜻이구요. flaw는 결함입니다. flaws 결함들이겠죠. 실제로 치아결함, 즉 음식물을 씹는데 문제가 없는 사람들을 보는 것은 충격이다. 이것은 무슨 뜻일까요. 즉, 대부분이 수술후에 음식물을 씹는데 후유증이 있다는 뜻입니다. 뒤에 바로 설명이 나오네요. flaws라는 명사뒤에 이렇게  daring 형용사 '위험성이 있는' 이죠.  to go through it  go through '겪다, 진행하다. 거치다." 여기는 문맥적으로 음식물을 씹는 과정을 말합니다. just to have a small, pretty face." 작은 이쁜 얼굴을 가지고서 음식물 씹는 과정에서 위험한 결함을 겪지 않는 사람이 없다는 뜻입니다.

I can't even feel when saliva keeps dripping out of my mouth."

I 나는 can't even feel 심지어 느낄 수 없데요. when saliva saliva는 '침'입니다. 침이  keeps dripping out of my mouth."아~~ 침이 입밖으로 흘러도 느낄 수가 없다는 군요.

불행히도 수술후 합병증으로 한 여성이 자살도 했군요.
