possibility, chance, opportunity 차이점 정리

오늘은 possibility, chance, opportunity의 차이점에 대해서 살펴보겠습니다.  

have the opportunity to 동사원형, 

There is a possibility 주어 + 동사 ~

opportunity는 '기회', possibility는 '가능성'라고 해석되는데, 이렇게만 알고 있으면 많이 헷갈립니다. 

opportunity는 항상 동사 have와 같이 쓰여서 'have the opportunity to do~', possibility는 주로 'there is a possibility 주어 + 동사' 형태로 쓰입니다. 

􏰀    There’s a possibility I might move to British Columbia next year.
        내년에 나는 British Columbia로 이주할 가능성이 있다. 

􏰀    I have the opportunity to work in my company’s Toronto office.
        나는 본사의 토론토 사무실에서 일할 기회를 가졌다.(우리나라 어감으로 과거형으로 해석했음)
        

하나 더 알아둘 것은, possibility의 뉘앙스인데, 가능성이 50%입니다. 생각한 일이 일어날 수도 있고, 일어나지 않을 수도 있습니다. 그러나, opportunity는 조금더 긍정적 뉘앙스입니다. 무언가에 대한 가능성이 높다는 것을 표현합니다. 그래서 possibility는 좋을 수도 있고, 안좋을 수도 있는 경우에 쓰고, opportunity는 좋은 일에만 씁니다.   

She's worried about the possibility of losing her job.
    그녀는 실직의 가능성에 대해서 걱정한다. 

I had the opportunity to do a study abroad program.
  나는 해외 유학 프로그램을 할 기회를 가졌다. 

You should take that job. It’s a great opportunity for your career.
    너 그 일 해야해. 너의 경력에 좋은 기회야. 

 chance

chance는 informal한 표현으로 케주얼하게 쉽게 possibilities나 opportunities을 대신해서 쓸 수 있습니다. 

This project has so many problems, so there’s little chance of success. 
    이 프로젝트는 너무 많은 문제가 있어서 성공할 가능성이 거의 없다.(= little possibility of succeeding)

Is there any chance of rain this weekend?
    이번 주말에 비올 가능성이 있나요? (= any possibility that it will rain)

The boy got a chance to meet his favorite professional basketball player.
    그 아이는 좋아하는 프로 농구 선수를 만날 기회를 가졌다. (= got the opportunity to meet his favorite player)

I was chosen to appear on the TV show! This is my chance to become famous!
    (나는 그 TV쇼에 출연에 선택되었다. 이건 유명해질 수 있는 기회다. (= my opportunity to become famous)
