오늘은 단어 matter에 대해서 살펴보겠습니다. 많은 분들이 matter에 대해서 궁금해하셨어요. 동사, 명사로 다양하게 쓰이는 matter입니다.

명사 matter = problem, trouble

명사 matter로 가장 많이 쓰이는 뜻은 '문제', '사건'이라는 뜻으로 의문문과 부정문에 쓰입니다.

What’s the matter with the computer?
    컴퓨터에 무슨 문제야?
I don’t know what the matter with Jane is. She seems down today.
    Jane에가 무슨 문제가 있는지 모르겠어. 그녀는 오늘 다운되어 보였어.

여기서 중요한 것은 '문제', '사건'이란 뜻일 때, 긍정문에는 쓰지 않습니다. 아래 대화에서 살펴볼께요. 

What’s the matter with the computer?
    컴퓨터에 무슨 문제야?
I think the problem is the hard drive.
    문제는 하드웨어라고 생각해.
    (I think the matter is the hard drive.라고 하지 않음)

그래서, "What's the matter~?"이라고 물었을 때, 대답은 "The problem is ~" 또는 "The issue is ~"로 대답해야 자연스럽습니다.

 동사 matter = be important

matter이 동사로 사용되는 경우에 그 뜻은 '중요하다(be important, be significant)입니다. 이러한 경우에 의문문과 부정문에 쓰입니다.

    Jim: Does it matter where we have lunch today?
                오늘 어디서 점심을 먹는게 중요한가요? 
    Jen: It doesn’t matter where we go, as long as it’s not fast food.
                패스트 푸드만 아니면 어딜 가든 상관없어.

다른 예문들을 보시겠습니다.

    Everything she says matters to me because I value her opinions.
        나는 그녀의 의견을 높이 평가하기 때문에 그녀가 말하는 모든 것은 나에게 중요하다.
   

위의 두 경우 외에도 matter은 다양한 뜻이 있습니다.

명사 matter = physical substance

과학 영역에서 matter은 물체를 구성하는 '물질', '성분' 이란 뜻입니다.

There has been no organic matter found on the moon.
    달에는 아무런 유기물이 발견되지 않았다.
In physics calls, the students learned about inorganic matter.
    물리학적인 판단으로, 학생들은 무기물에대해서 배웠다.

명사 matter = written / printed material

 조금은 격식체(a bit formal)로 쓰이는 경우인데, 책이나, 뉴스, 논문의 내용, 교재를 말할 때도 있습니다

    I have prepared some reading matter for class today.
        나는 오늘 수업용으로 읽기 자료(읽을거리)를 준비했다.
    That company deals with digitizing printed matter.
        그 회사는 전자 출판물을 다룬다.

 명사 matter = an issue / situation

마지막으로 matter은 지금 현재 염려하고, 토론 중인 '이슈', '정세', '사태'를 가리킵니다.

The marketing problem? We discussed the matter all morning.
    마케팅 문제는? 우리는 아침에 그 이슈에 대해서 토론했다.
I am aware that John’s performance is not good and I have already reviewed the matter with the boss.
    나는 John의 성과가 좋지 않았다는 것을 알았고, 벌써 보스와 그 사태에 대해서 재검토했다.
