영어독해 트럼프와 김정은 6.12 회담

참 오랜만이죠?

먹고 살기가 쉽지 않네요. 다들 잘 지내시죠?

오늘은 영자 신문을 한번 읽어 보겠습니다. 트럼프 대통령과 김정은 국방위원장의 회담 관련 뉴스입니다.

항상 말씀 드리지만, 영어를 읽을 때는 그냥 왼쪽에서 오른쪽으로 질문하면서 읽어 가는 거 아시죠?

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un could be in line for a Nobel Peace Prize. 

대통령은 President 이지만 북한의 경우는 최고 지도자 Supreme Leader 라는 표현은 썼습니다.

could be in line for 

be in line for? 줄을 서 있을 수 있다? 맞습니다. 줄 선상에 있다. 그래서 ~할 공산이 있다는 뜻입니다. 그럼 뭘 할 공산이 있다? 바로 for 다음에 나올 겁니다. 

a Nobel Peace Prize. 

바로 노벨상. 아하

찬스, ~을 할 수 있겠구나 정도로 해석되겠네요. 뭘? of~

상 받는 구나. 상을 받다 win the award

역사적인 회담 뒤에... 아 회담을 meeting이라고 하는 구나 싱가프로에서 화요일에... 전치사구는 장소/시간 순으로 나열하는 구나...

Betting companies have cut their odds on one or both of them getting the prestigious prize.

bet 바로 '내기하다'라는 동사죠 betting companies 흔히 우리 뉴스들이 말하는 도박(회)사 들이죠? 분명히 다음 동사에는 내기를 걸다. 걸다는 표현을 어떻게 할까 궁금해 해야합니다.

아~~ cut 이라는 동사를 썼네요. cut one's odd odd는 내기에서 배당률입니다. 무엇에 대한 배팅 이라고 할 때, 어떤 전치사를 쓰는지.. 전치사 on이 나왔구나 까지 알아야합니다. 

보통 우리가 전치사를 공부할 때, "전치사 + 명사" 로 묶어서 공부를 하죠? 이것이 일반적인 그동안의 영어 공부 방법이었을 겁니다. 그러나 앞으로는 전치사 앞에 나오는 동사와 명사를 더 우선해서 공부해야 영어 공부가 늡니다.

명사 위에 나오는 동사-ing는 그 명사에 대한 설명입니다. 이것을 명사를 수식한다고 생각하기 보다는 그냥 설명한다고 생각하고 해석하면 됩니다. 

그 둘 중에 한명 또는 두사람 모두에서 배팅을 한다는 건데, 어떤? 유명한/명망있는 상을 받는 것... 쉽죠?

트럼프 대통령이 it(노벨상)을 받을 것은 지금 2/1이다. 곧 200%이다는 이야기죠.

혼자 혹는 팀의 파트로? 함께 받는다고 보면 되겠죠?

북한은 포기한다. 뭘? 핵무기를...

미국은 어? 다시 명사 뒤에 동사-ing가 나오면 명사 설명이라고 했죠? 미국 어떤 미국? war games를 중단하는 미국.. 누구와? with 한국과 말이죠. 근데 이 미국은 would definitely 명확하게 단호하게 한다는 거죠? 뭘? 다음에 흔히 우리가 말하는 5형식 문장이 나오죠? make한다 뭘? the world를 어떻게? a safer place로 만든다는 거죠.

Asle Sveen 사람 이름이죠? 컴마 뒤에 이 사람이 어떤 사람인지 말해줍니다. a Nobel Prize historian 노벨상 역사 연구가였군요. 이 사람이 말했네요.

흔히 말하는 가정법 문장이네요. would가 나온 거 보니 100%라는 말이네요. 

한반도가 정말 군비축소(disarmament)가 일어나면은, 노벨상을 그들에게 안주는게 어려울 거다고 말했네요.

대통령 트럼프와 김위원장의 역사적인 만남/회담은

will go down in history as a key event of the early twenty-first century. 

go down in history

go down은 정말 뜻이 많습니다. 그냥 내려가다/침몰하다/값품질이 떨어지다/납듣하다 등등 여러가지 뜻이 있는 phrasal verb입니다. 이렇게 in history가 뒤에 오면 아하! 역사에 기록되다는 뜻입니다.

as a key event of the early twenty-first century. 

키 이벤트로 뭐? 21세기 초에

정말 처음이다. 뭐가?

미국 대통령과 북한 지도자가 한자리에 앉는 것죠. 

흔히 문법책에서 보는 It ~ that ~ 강조 문구죠?

The two men shook hands, met in private, had lunch together, and signed an agreement that promised a better future together. 

정말 쉽게 설명하죠?

두 사람은 악수했고, 비공식 회담을 하고, 점심도 같이 먹고(오찬회담), 서명도 했다 어떤 서명? that ~ 더 나은 미래를 약속하는 

Some people say the two leaders do not deserve the prize. 

몇몇 사람들은 말한다. 뭘? 두 지도자들은 노벨상을 받을 자격이 없다고 하네요. 

deserve 뒤에 이렇게 명사가 오면 그냥 명사지만 동사가 오려면 to do 형태로 오면 됩니다.

They say that the world is less secure because President Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement and destabilized the Iran nuclear deal.

뭐라고 하는지 볼까요?

세계가 덜 안전해졌다. 더 불안해졌다는 거죠? 왜?

대통령 트럼프는 withdraw 약속/협정을 취소했다는 거죠? the Paris Climate Agreement 파리기후협약이군요. 그럼 from 전치사를 알아둬야겠죠? 그리고 destabilize 악화시켰다는데 뭘? the Iran nuclear deal 이란 핵 협정이죠. 

The critics also point to human rights issues in North Korea. 

The critics 비평가들이 또 지적하는게있군요. 북한 인권 이슈입니다. 

Other people say South Korean President Moon Jae-in deserves the prize.

다른 사람들은 말하는데, 한국 대통령 문재인이 노벨상을 받을만하다고 하네요.
