although, even though, in spite of, despite 용법 정리

오늘은 In spite of / Despite / Although / Even though 에 대해서 살펴보겠습니다. '비록 ~하지만, ~한다 하더라도'의 뜻으로 사용되는 접속사와 전치사입니다.
양보절이 뭐지?
접속사 although 하면 꼭 머리에 떠오르는 문법 용어는 '양보절을 이끄는 접속사'입니다. 제가 중학교 때 영어를 처음 공부하기 시작할 때 '양보절'이라는 문법 용어는 정말 이해하기 힘들었습니다. 도대체 무엇을 양보는 하는 것인지 알 수가 없었기 때문입니다. '~일지라도', '~이지만' 이 왜 양보의 뜻이지? 이해가 되지 않습니다.
솔직히 양보절 이라는 말이 굳이 시험에 나오지 않는다면 지금 부터 그냥 잊으셔도 좋습니다.
although, though, even though 같은 접속사는 but과 의미가 같은 그냥 "대조"를 나타냅니다. 영어로 쓰여진 문법책에는 contrast(대조)를 뜻하는 adverb clause(부사절)이라고 나오지만, 양보? 이런 용어는 없습니다.
Although it was noisy and crowded, we had a good time.
시끄럽고 붐볐지만, 좋은 시간을 보냈다.
→ We had a good time, but it was noisy and crowed.
그래서, 위의 두 문장은 의미가 똑같습니다.
이제 좀 양보절에 대한 생각이 명쾌해지셨죠?
although + 주어 동사
although 뒤에는 주어 동사가 옵니다. 뜻은 '~임에도 불구하고', '~했지만', '~한다고 하더라도' 입니다. 아래 예문을 보겠습니다.
Although it was raining today, I walked to the office.
오늘 비가 왔지만, 나는 사무실로 걸어갔다.
Although John is a great Italian chef, he doesn’t bake bread.
John은 훌륭한 이탈리안 세프지만, 그는 빵은 만들지 않는다.
Jane just got a cat although she has always had dogs.
그는 늘 강아지가 있었지만 Jane은 지금 고양이를 분양했다.
even though + 주어 동사
even though와 although는 뜻이 비슷합니다. even though가 약간 더 강한 느낌입니다. even though도 뒤에 주어, 동사가 옵니다.
Even though it was raining today, I walked to the office.
Even though John is a great Italian chef, he doesn’t bake bread.
Jane just got a cat, even though she has always loved dogs.
In spite of + 명사
despite + 명사
in spite of와 despite도 대조의 의미 '~했지만', '~했음에도 불구하고' 입니다. 'in spite of + 명사', 'despite + 명사'로 쓰입니다.
In spite of the rain, I walked to the office today.
Despite the rain, I walked to the office today.
비에도 불구하고, 나는 오늘 사무실에 걸어갔다.
In spite of John’s cooking skills, he doesn’t bake bread.
Despite John’s cooking skills, he doesn’t bake bread.
John의 요리 기술에도 불구하고, 그는 빵을 만들지 않는다.
In spite of Jane’s love of dogs, she just got a cat.
Despite Jane’s love of dogs, she just got a cat.
Jane의 강아지에 대한 사랑에도, 그녀는 고양이를 분양했다.
주의할 것은, 'in spite of' 때문에 'despite of'라고 하기 쉬운데 그냥 despite만 전치사입니다. 헷갈리면 안됩니다.
