bare vs. barely, late vs. lately, short vs. shortly 차이점 정리 

라쿤잉글리시 미친너굴입니다. 

오늘은 형용사에서 부사가 되었지만, 뜻이 아주 달라지는 대표적인 세 가지 단어를 살펴보겠습니다. 

bare vs. barely

형용사 bare는 '기본적인(simple)' 혹은 '텅 빈(without any decoration)' 이란 뜻입니다. 그리고 '헐벗은(naked, unclothed)'입니다. 

The room was bare when I moved in to the office.

내가 그 사무실로 이사했을 때, 그 방은 텅 비어있었다. 

I put a poster on the bare wall to decorate it.

나는 썰렁한 벽을 꾸미려고 포스터를 붙였다. 

I like to walk on the beach in my bare feet.

나는 맨발로 해안가를 걷기를 좋아한다

부사 barely는 '꼭(only just)', '거의 ... 아니게', 라는 부정어 뜻입니다. 하나 더 알아야 할 것은 '아슬아슬하게 ~ 하다'라는 긍정적인 뜻으로도 쓰입니다. 

When I first lived in Japan, I was barely able to communicate in Japanese.

내가 일본에 처음 살았을 때, 나는 일본어로 거의 의사소통을 할 수 없었다. 

I barely noticed that Jane colored her hair.

나는 Jane 염색된 그녀의 머리를 거의 알아보지 못했다.  

I barely started working when my computer broke down.

나는 컴퓨터가 고장이 나서 거의 일을 시작할 수가 없었다. 

 late vs lately

형용사 late는 '늦은(not on time or after the expected time)', '지각한' 뜻입니다.   

The trains and buses in Toronto are often late.

토론토의 기차와 버스는 보통 늦는다.

I was late this morning

오늘 아침에 늦었다. 

Don’t be late. The boss will get angry.

늦지 마. 그 사장이 화낼 거야.

 부사 lately 뜻은 '최근에(recently)'입니다.  

Lately, the weather has been getting warmer.

최근에 날씨는 더워지고 있다. 

I haven’t see Jack lately. I guess he’s been busy at work.

나는 최근에 Jack를 못봤어. 요즘 일이 바쁜가봐.

I haven’t eaten sushi lately. Let’s have it for lunch!

나는 최근에 스시를 안먹었어. 점심 먹으러가자!

short vs. shortly

형용사 short는 뜻은 '부족한(not long enough)', '키가 작은(small in height)' 입니다.

I am too short to reach the top shelf. Can you hand me that book?

나는 너무 작아서 책꽂이 꼭대기칸에 다을 수가 없어요. 저 책 건네 주세요.

I was surprised that the actor is short. He looks tall on TV.

그 배우가 키가 작은 것을 보고 놀랐다. 그는 TV에서 키가 커보인다. 

This USB cable is short, so I need to move the printer closer to the PC.

이 USB 케이블이 짧다. 그래서 프린터를 PC에 가깝게 옮겨야한다.

부사 shortly는 뜻은 '시간상으로 얼마 안되어(in a little while), 곧(soon)' 입니다. 

I’ll be finished with this phone call shortly and then we can chat.

전화는 곧 끝내고, 우리 채팅할 수 있다. 

The taxi should be here shortly, so put on your jacket and get ready.

택시가 곧 올거야, 그래서 자켓입고 갈 준비해. 

Here is your table. The waiter will be with you shortly.

여기가 테이블입니다. 웨이터가 곧 함께할 것입니다.

 When I moved in to my new office, it was pretty bare. There was just a desk, table, and two chairs. I didn’t waste any time to decorate it. I was barely there a week and had put up the RaccoonEnglish sign, a clock, and a nice poster on the wall. Lately, I’ve been thinking of how else I can decorate it. I stopped by the poster shop on the way in, but I didn’t have much time to look. I didn’t want to be late for class so I thought I could go back another day.
