accept vs except - 헷갈리는 영어 단어 정리

accept 와 except 는 뭐가 다를까요?

accept 

 Accept = take or receive something that was offered or given

동사 accept는 '제공되거나 주어져있는 것을 받아들이거나 가진다'는 뜻입니다. 그래서 자연스럽게 수용한다로 해석되죠. 주로 선물, 돈 같은 눈에 보이는 것일 수도 있고, 제안이나, 법률을 받아들이는 것입니다.

Jack’s such a nice guy. He wouldn’t accept any money for driving us to the station.

Jack는 괜찮은 녀석이다. 그는 우리를 역으로 운전해주고 아무 돈도 안받았다. 

I heard Nick proposed to Lori, and she accepted! They are such a nice couple.

나는 Nick이 Lori에게 프로포즈했고, 그녀가 받아들였다고 들었다. 그들은 멋진 커플이다. 

We accept cash, credit cards, and debit.

우리는 현금, 신용카드, 데빗 다 받습니다. 

 accept = regard someone or something with approval

accept의 다른 뜻은 '구성원으로 받아들이다'는 뜻도 있습니다. 

Bob was accepted to Stamford University.

Bob은 Stamford 대학교에 받아들여졌다. 

Jane was accepted into the tennis club, even though she is not such a great player.

Jane은 그렇게 훌륭한 플레이어가 아니지만, 테니스 동호회에 받아들여졌다. 

 accept = recognize or believe something as correct

마지막으로, accept의 뜻은 '사실, 정확함을 받아들이다 / 인정하다'는 의미도 있습니다. 

I accept the fact that I made a huge mistake yesterday.

나는 어제 내가 큰 실수를 했음을 인정했다. 

I can not accept the policy of testing chemicals on animals.

나는 동물을 대상으로한 화학 실험 정책을 받아 들일 수 없다. 

 Except

except = excluding

except는 전치사로 '~을 제외하고', '~외에는'이란 뜻입니다. 

 

Everyone went to the party except Joe.

Joe를 제외하고 모든 사람들이 파티에 갔다.

Except anchovy, I can eat any pizza topping.

멸치 외에는, 나는 어떤 피자 토핑도 먹을 수 있다. 

All of the furniture in the room, except the table, needs to be moved out.

테이블을 제외한, 그 방의 모든 가구는 밖으로 옮길 필요가 있다. 

 except = excluding

except는 접속사로 '~제외한', '~한 점만 제외하면' 이란 뜻도 있답니다. 

I would hire Jack except that I’ve heard he’s not usually punctual.

나는 그가 보통 시간엄수를 하지 않는다는 점만 제외하면 Jack를 고용할거다. 

She didn’t say anything except that she was hungry.

그녀는 배고품외에는 어떤 것도 말 할 수 없었다. 

This new desk is the same as my old one except the color is a little darker.

이 세 책상은 색깔이 조금 어두운 것만 제외하고는 예전 것과 똑같다. 

  두 단어는 모두 2음절 단어지만, 첫음절 발음이 다릅니다. 

accept [æk-sépt]

except [ik- sépt]
