오늘은 but, and, so 같은 접속사를 너무 많이 써서 문장이 틀리는 경우를 살펴보겠습니다. 

 and, but, so를 남발하는 경우

영어 글쓰기를 할 때, 문장을 연결하려고, and, but, so와 같은 접속사를 과도하게 사용하는 경우도 Choppy writing처럼 잘못 쓰인 문장이 되어버립니다. 문장이 너무 길어지면, 두 문장 사이가 어떤 관계인지 이해가 되지 않아서, 전달하려고 하는 내용히 명학하지 않기 때문입니다.

그래서 말하고나 하는 문장 즉, main idea가 포함된 문장과 추가 정보를 제시하는 supporting 문장을 잘 구분해서, 너무 문장이 길어지지 않게 적는 것이 중요합니다. 

예시 지문 

There are now over 31 million Spanish-speaking people living in the United States, and their number is rapidly increasing, and  by the year 2050, they will be the largest minority group, and they will make up one-fourth of the nation's population.

A small town in Texas has many residents from Mexico, and they speak Spanish, so the town decided to make Spanish its official language, but the same thing will probably not happen in many other places in the United States. 

위의 지문을 보면, 너무 많은 and와 but, so이 있습니다. 한 문장이 한 문단입니다. 그래서 한 문장을 두개, 세개의 문장으로 나누어 적는 게 좋습니다. 문장을 나눌때, 동등한 관계인지 종속적인 관계인지 잘 생각해야합니다.

2050년까지, 전체 인구의 1/4를 차지하는, 가장 큰 소수 집단이 될 걸로 예상된다.

텍사스의 작은 마을은 스페인어를 하는 멕시코 주민들이 많아서, 그 타운은 스페인어를 공용어로 정했다. 

However, the same thing will probably not happen in many other places in the United States. 

하지만, 같은 경우는 미국의 다른 곳에서는 아마도 일어나지 않을 거다.
