[구동사 정리] 동사 break가 들어가는 Phrasal Verb


라쿤잉글리시 미친너굴입니다. 


요며칠을 구동사(phrasal verb)에 대해서 살펴보고 있습니다. 그 중에서 오늘은 동사 break가 들어가는 phrasal verb입니다. 다양한 뜻을 익혀보겠습니다. 




break away from something = separate from thing


break away from 은 어느 대상에서 '떨어져나가다', '분리시키다', '탈피하다'는 뜻입니다. 


When the baby elephant broke away from the group, its mother went after it.

어린 코끼리가 무리에서 떨어져 나가자, 그 어미가 그를 쫒았다. 

Apple is always breaking away from tradition and releasing new gadgets all the time.

Apple은 언제나 관습에서 탈피해서 새로운 제품을 늘 출시한다. 



break down은 여러가지 뜻이 있습니다. 

 break down = have an emotional release or outburst


break down이라고 하면 먼저 감정을 주체할 수 없이 슬퍼서 눈물이 주르르 나는 상황을 생각하시면 됩니다. 그래서 보통 '정신이 이상해지다', '슬프다' 등으로 해석되죠. 


Jack broke down when he heard his grandfather had passed away.

Jack은 그의 할머니가 돌아가셨다는 소식을 듣고 슬펐다. 

The thief broke down and confessed his crime to the police.

그 강도는 감정이 무너지고, 경찰에게 범행을 자백했다. 



break down = stop working 


Break down이 많이 쓰이는 경우는 '기계가 고장나다'는 뜻일 때 입니다.  


My car broke down again. I think I need a new mechanic.

내 차가 다시 고장이 났다. 내 생각에게 새 정비공이 필요해. 

The printer in the office broke down, so I can’t prepare for the meeting.

사무실 프린터가 고장이 나서, 나는 그 미팅을 준비할 수 없다. 



break down = analyze number in finance or budgets


break down는 '세세히 분석하다'는 뜻도 있습니다. 


When we break down this financial report, it looks like the last quarter was good for the company.

우리가 재정보고서를 세세히 분석하니, 지난 분기가 회사에 좋았던 걸로 보인다. 

My boss asked me to break down the sales figures for the last three years.

  사장님이 나에게 지난 3년간의 판매 수치를 분석하라고 했다. 



break in = enter someplace illegally when nobody is there


break in는 먼저 아무도 없는 장소에 '무단 침입하다'는 뜻입니다. 


Someone broke in to the coffee shop and stole the computer.

누군가가 커피숍에 무단 침입해서 컴퓨터를 훔쳤다. 

Jane has three locks on her door to prevent someone from breaking in.

Jane은 누군가가 침입하는 것을 막을려고 문에 세개의 좌물쇠를 체웠다. 



break in  = use something new until it is comfortable and you are used to it


break in은 또 '길들이다', '훈련시키다'는 뜻입니다. 


A new pair of boots usually needs a week or so to break in.

새 부츠는 보통 길들이는데 몇 주가 필요하다. 

These gloves are very stiff. Do you know how I can break them in?

이 글러브는 너무 뻣뻣하다. 글러브를 길들이는 법 아니?


참고로. break in은 '대화에 끼어들다'는 뜻도 있습니다. 



break into = become an entertainer in music or show business 


Break into는 '음악이나 공연을 하는 연예인이 되다'는 뜻입니다.  


Brad has been going on lots of auditions to break into television.

Brad는 텔레비젼에 출현할려고 많은 오디션에 나왔다. 

If you want to break into the music business, you’ll need talent and luck.

너가 음악에 연예인이 되고 싶다면, 재능과 운이 있어야해. 



 break out of = escape from confinement


break out of 의 뜻은 '갑갑함 억매임에서 벗어나다' 입니다. 


Three prisoners broke out of the county jail last week.

3명의 수감자가 지난주에 카운티 감옥에서 탈출했다. 

My dog is always trying to break out of the backyard.

내 강아지는 늘 뒷뜰을 벗어날려고 한다. 


 break out in something = suddenly begin performing 


break out in은 '갑자기 무언가가 발생하다. 행하다'는 뜻입니다. 

 

When their football team won, the fans broke out in song.

그들의 축구팀이 이기자, 팬들이 갑자기 노래를 불렀다. 

At the restaurant last night, the waiter suddenly broke out in a Jack Nicholson impersonation.

지난 밤 그 식당에서,  그 웨이터는 갑자기 Jack Nicholson 성대묘사를 했다. 



 break up = end a situation or a relationship


break up은 '관계를 끊다', '보통 무엇과 헤어지다'입니다. 

관계를 끊는 당사자 끼리 대상을 말할 때는 전치사 with가 같이 쓰입니다. 


The teacher had to break up a fight between two students.

 그 선생님은 두 학생간의 싸움을 끊어야했다. 

My sister is much happier since she broke up with her boyfriend.

내 동생은 그녀의 남자친구와 헤어진 후로 더 행복하다. 



break가 있는 구동사를 정리했습니다.
